SafePolyMed concludes with hands-on workshop on reducing the risks in polypharmacy
After four years of collaborative research, the SafePolyMed consortium gathered in Brussels on 30 June and 1 July 2026 for its final meeting and outreach workshop. The two-day event marked an important milestone, bringing together project partners to review the project's achievements before opening the doors to external stakeholders for an interactive demonstration of the tools developed throughout the project.
The first day was dedicated to the consortium's final progress meeting. Partners reviewed the project's results and key outputs, discussed sustainability and dissemination activities beyond the project's lifetime, assessed progress towards the project's objectives, and aligned on the remaining activities leading up to the project's completion.
Engaging stakeholders through hands-on demonstrations
The second day shifted the focus from internal discussions to dialogue with the wider community. During the final workshop, "Reducing the Risks in Polypharmacy," the consortium welcomed policy officers, patient representatives, and other interested stakeholders to experience first-hand how SafePolyMed's digital solutions can support safer medication management for patients affected by polypharmacy. Following an introduction to the challenges of polypharmacy and an overview of the project's achievements, participants explored two of SafePolyMed's flagship innovations: the Medication Management Center (MMC) and the Decision Support System for model-based precision dosing. Rather than simply presenting the software, the consortium invited guests to actively test the tools themselves through interactive demonstrations.
To make the experience as realistic as possible, the project team developed two fictional patient cases, John Kidney and Anna Depress, each with their own medication plans and clinical challenges. Participants used these cases to navigate the Medication Management Center from a patient's perspective and explore how the Decision Support System can support more personalised dosing decisions in complex treatment scenarios.
Looking beyond the project
The interactive format sparked lively discussions throughout the workshop. Participants expressed strong interest in the project's results and provided valuable feedback on potential future developments. Conversations focused on how the usability and functionality of both tools could be further enhanced, as well as the practical steps needed to move the technologies from their current technology readiness level towards real-world implementation. The discussion also highlighted the commercial potential of the SafePolyMed solutions. Participants identified promising opportunities for use by the pharmaceutical industry, particularly in supporting drug development and drug repurposing processes, where advanced medication modelling and decision support could help improve treatment strategies and patient safety.
As SafePolyMed approaches the end of the project, the workshop demonstrated that the consortium's work has generated solutions with relevance well beyond the project's lifetime. By bringing together researchers, patient representatives, and policymakers, the event provided valuable insights that will help shape the next steps towards translating SafePolyMed's innovations into practice.
